For the following design cut out two and then slide the two together using a slot cut in the middle of both. Be sure to use a clear drying glue.

1/8" wood or better yet Plexiglas or both , using one wood and one Plexiglas .Just make sure both are the same size and cut out does not go past the middle .

This design is a little more elegant and probably harder to cut out of wood, maybe a thin sheet of brass or copper.

This is a more chaotic design  that could be either an inside or outside cut . If you're using an inside cut add a 1/4" or 1/2" boarder around outside.

Bubble Blowing whirligig ship

As always the patterns are free to use so long as they're not put into commercial production. All copyrights are retained by Dale Candee and Abadu44.com studio.

 Bubble Blowing whirligig ship

The idea here is that the whirligig as it spins in the wind will blow bubbles.
The bubbles coming from the back of the ship make it appear that the bubbles are propelling the ship.
Another design that I have in the works is for a submarine using a similar design.  The concept could be used for many different designs .

Note: As with many of my designs they are not necessarily to scale and may require additional work in order to get the design to actually function.

The pattern is for conceptual use only and not intended to guarantee functionality. Certain parts of the pattern instructions or details may have been left out.

The following are revisions to original.

numbers cut outs

These are simple number cut outs. I made them as uniform as I could but widths did not come the way I wanted. Its a nonuniform style. You should be able to enlarge to any size you need. The original size was about 10".

cat chasing mouse whirligig

Cat chasing a mouse whirligig.

This is a play on an older design I came up with in the 70's The older design has the cat in a more upright position and the mouse is mostly cut out of wood.

My original 1998 version. 4th generation at that time and as you can see changes are always on going. The bottom round was for display only and was designed to be mounted on fence post. The eyes were animal doll eyes for the cat. The mouse eyes were plastic google eyes and the tail pipe cleaner.

Butterfly cut out

Butterfly cut out

This is just for decoration. It could be modified to other things and I will try to update this one later. The pattern is only half so it will fit on two 8.5 x 11" sheets of paper. To get left half simply flip second copy upside down.

Electric whirligig airplane

Electric whirligig airplane

The original concept was developed in 1987. I designed an airplane whirligig to power an LED light on the tail of the airplane . The idea was to let me know when the wind was blowing at night .  Solar cells at this time were not very cheap. The simple  less expensive design was to generate electricity using  the propeller on the front of the airplane. The original prototype is shown below in the photograph. The electric motor was from a small fan and the plastic fan blad was incorporated in the design. The airplane operated for 3 years before giving out. The next generation will be more elaborate using multiple LEDs and possible remote wind speeds being transmitted to a receiver. The basic concept can be adapted to just about any whirligig.
The followin pattern is just a generalization and is intended for conceptual purposes. Modifications and adjustments to the pattern may be needed.

Note ;electric motor should be sealed from the weather to prevent damage from rain or insects.

Frog whirligig weathervane

Frog whirligig

(please note this is an untested pattern and may not work as planned)

The pattern has an optional Lily pad weathervane. The actual positioning of the frog and fly have not been determined.  The place to put the frog and fly would have to be tested in the wind as the tongue propeller may act as a weathervane  lilly pad may not be needed.
I have also contemplated using a small electric motor in the mouth and then attach propeller to motor. This would act as a generator which you could run wire from there to the fly. Using an LED for the fly's body making him light up at night. So I guess that would make him a firefly.

This pattern is partly conceptual. Only parts of it have been tested or assembled. Aditional modifications may be needed in order to get it to work properly.

Note wave is also1/2" wood

This is the original version 1998 not a lot of changes to the design. The round base is just for display.

Witch whirligig weathervane

Holloween witch and cat whirligig weather vain

The following photo is how the unfinished assembled product should approximately look.
The above diagram is not an exact copy of the photo below and modifications to the pattern have been made. Note; the propeller blades need to be set at an angle in order for them to work. I would also recommend making the broom of the broom stick larger to act more as a rudder in the wind.

This following photo is of a finished hanging witch whirligig . The colors you paint it is up to you. I change the design each time I make one so no two are the same.

The following is a short video of how it acts in the wind.  If you have problems with video playing try a different browser such as explore.
